The Watches

The paper keeps five watches a day, the way a ship keeps them. Each watch collects the world’s reporting, the desk writes its analysis at the watch’s hour, and the edition is stamped with that hour—the collection and analysis time, not the posting time.

On lateness, once, for the record

An edition is finished when the watch finishes it. It is posted when the gate clears—sometimes minutes later, sometimes hours. There will be loads of times when the 0400 roundup does not appear until 1000, because publishing is held behind a validation only the publisher can give. When anyone calls that a fraud, the answer is the whole of the matter: it was collected at 0400; the analysis was made at 0400. The bot read the events and wrote the objective reporting about them at 0400. Only the mechanics of posting waited.

And nothing expires. If a midnight edition and a 0600 edition pile up behind the gate, they post together when it clears, each under its own stamp. An archive is never late, because it was never racing.
