The Bureau’s Sources
The Shelf
Everything the desk reads, arranged by the working desks it comes in over. The shelf is ingested whole.
No source is excluded by ownership. The desk takes the wires and the public broadcasters, the state outlets of China and Russia and the Gulf and everywhere else, the partisan papers and the journals of opinion, the propaganda of every capital including this one—because all the reporting is reporting, and a claim does not stop being evidence because its source had a motive for printing it. Discernment is the reader’s work and the desk’s; it is done over the whole shelf at once, in the open, or it is not done at all. Gold from all the mud.
Names are printed plainly. The desk does not describe the institutions; it describes their stories, in the editions, one at a time.

Every item the desk takes from this shelf is filed in the editions under the subjective stamp, described by what it says. The desk’s own analysis—the one item in each edition stamped objective—is written from this shelf and from nothing else, and the clippings are printed beneath it so the sourcing can be audited. See The Fine Print for what the stamps mean, exactly.
