Editorial — Format Demonstration
The Editorial Format
Every editorial in this paper opens like this page: with the stamp doing the talking before the argument says a word.
That stamp is the whole of the house rule for opinion. It is not a warning and it is not an apology. It is a filing mark, struck at the head of the column the way a bureau strikes a slug on copy, and it means exactly what The Fine Print says it means: this item comes from a position, as all sources have positions, and it is printed because the paper judges it useful for the reader to know what the position is and how it argues.
The desk’s reports are stamped differently because they are made differently: wire copy first, contested claims attributed, every linked story described by what it says, and no argument smuggled in as furniture. An editorial makes its argument in the open or it does not run.
No editorial is filed on this page. This page is the standing demonstration of the format—the empty chair at the editorial table, kept dressed so that the first column, when it comes, arrives in uniform. The chair is empty because the paper opened this morning, November 4, 2026, with a news report and not an opinion, which the editors regard as the correct order of things.
